Rochester, NY – July 11, 2023 – D3, announced their DesignCore® RS-L6432U mmWave Radar Sensor, based on the Texas Instruments (TI) IWRL6432 device. Like D3’s existing miniature sensors in form and function, this new sensor enables the implementation of many different mmWave radar algorithms to measure, detect, and track. The RS-L6432U, however, is targeted for much lower power and lower volume costs. The production-intent sensor features a 1-inch cube form factor, heat-spreading metal body, and mounting tabs. It may be used with a PC, embedded platform, or stand-alone to facilitate field testing, sensing evaluation, algorithm development, and application demonstrations.

Automotive applications supported by this sensor include driver and passenger monitoring. Industrial applications include robotics, autonomous machines, industrial vehicle systems, and facility monitoring. Commercial and medical applications include presence detection, vital signs monitoring, motion detection, and ultrasonic sensor replacement for lighting and HVAC. The sensor can also be used in many other use cases with a tethered host processor or stand-alone.

The sensor features the TI IWRL6432 single-chip radar IC integrating an Arm® core, radar accelerator, and complete radar subsystem. The RF front end integrates a PLL, two transmitters, three receivers, and a baseband ADC. The RFIC covers the 57 to 64 GHz band and features 11 dBm transmit power and a typical noise figure of 12.5 dB. The processing cores in the devices include an Arm® M4F® at 160 MHz for algorithms, object tracking, classification, and communications as well as a TI’s Radar Hardware Accelerator 1.2 for FFT, Log Magnitude, and CFAR operations.

The main interface of the RS-L6432U is a single USB-C connector which can act as a power supply input as well as providing processed radar returns or other algorithm output over USB serial.

The sensor is delivered pre-programmed with firmware from TI’s SDK.
